Hamlet’s interaction with the gravediggers is one of my favorite scenes in all of literature. What does it reveal to us about Hamlet?
Also, knowing me as your teacher all year, why do you think I like it?
Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.

ReplyDeleteI think my teacher looooves this scene because it tells us the other side of poverty. Many ignorant people see the poor as uneducated, low-class, and they stink. But in this scene it shows us more because one of the gravedigger's had the smarts and tried to play in Hamlet's mind, which was sort of a success, but a failure. Hamlet learned something at that moment by someone who isn't rich or famouse and who uses common sense.

ReplyDeleteI think what you liked most about this scene is that somebody finally plays with Hamlet. In the play Hamlet is always the smart one and he starts to become way over his head. When someone with a much lesser education gets to show Hamlet he is not that great, the viewer gets also the feeling of satisfaction of seeing how the wit and wisdom of the digger is enough to be smarter than the educated man. He is also quite funny so that adds up.

ReplyDelete"I think the reason why Mr. Gerber likes the scene is because its the only scene were the script has a double meaning. Just like Romeo & Juliet has alot of double meaning with sexual references, this scene has tons of double meanings but non sexual like Romeo and Juliet."

ReplyDeleteThis scene reveals the other side of Hamlet... out of the castle walls. His interaction with lower class people and it seems that Hamlet thinks that he is an ingnorant person and because of that he starts talking to him as if he were superior but at the end of the conversation just realizes that no matter who they are, they will end up in the same place. I think Mr. Gerber loves this character because eventhough he is not royalty or had a fancy education, it didnt mean that he was not wise. His observations and experience have him wisdom and allowed him to look as tall as the very own prince. the gravedigger was a clever person who got to play with the "smartest" and most important character of the play.

ReplyDeleteHamlet's interaction with the gravediggers mad him notice how it does not mater who you are, your status, your wealth or anything that you own in like or even have accomplished because in the end we all end up as food for worms, and all of the efforts and time you put into things were worth for nothing. I personally agree with Hamlet that we all are the same but not only in the end, I also think that we are equal throughout all lifetime, That no one is better than another person. Although I disagree with everything else Hamlet thinks. I think that you have one like, and that you have to live it the best way you can, while you can, Not just give up and let it all flow, ad wait to see what happens. Great things don't just take time, they also take effort.

ReplyDeleteThe gravedigger's personality is like Mr. Gerber. The way of his talking and thinking seemed like Mr. Gerber and maybe Mr. Gerber likes this scene because the gravedigger was clever and he knew about his job, its significant and importance. Also, the gravedigger's thoughts are deep and maybe those thoughts were the same things Mr. Gerber thought. I think Mr. Gerber likes the way he talks with Hamlet and other gravedigger and his explanations of life and his job.
I think Mr. Gerber liked this scene because he can identify with the gravedigger #1. I bleive this because they both have similar personalities and scence of humor. As well, i think Mr. Gerber liked how the gravedigger plays with Hamlets eventhough Hamlet is always "the smart one" and the one that plays with people.

ReplyDeleteI think that you liked this scene in Hamlet so much because you like the grave diggers witty sense of humor and also because the nameless character has the most real, down to earth personality. And also you might have found it amusing to see how the lower class gravedigger used his words to play with prince Hamlet.
