To what extent do parents have the right to “spy” or check up on their children? What circumstance might allow or prevent this? Do Claudius and Gertrude have the right to spy on Hamlet?

Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.

ReplyDeleteI think that sometimes spying on children is reasonable to the extent that it is only for a matter of making sure the child is okay. Like if you suspect your child is doing drugs, the best thing to do is spy a bit to figure out if its true to help him/her. But not going to the extremes like checking the facebook or msn conversations.
I think that Claudius and Gertrude have the right to spy on Hamlet because they want to figure out what's wrong with Hamlet in order to help him.

ReplyDeleteIt is alright to spy because they have to protect their children and I think parents have the right if it is not with a bad intention. They should not spy in personal situation. In case of Ophelia's father, he has the right to spy Ophelia but not Hamlet and for Hamlet's uncle, he doesn't have right for both of them.

ReplyDeleteParents have the right to spy on their kids. Why? Because they made the kid and raised the kid. The only reason parents spy is to be sure that their children are safe and there is nothing wrong with that. But parents have a limit, for example, when their kid grows into a mature adult and moves out of their house, then the parents have no right to spy on the kids unless it is wanted. Claudius and Gertude have right intentions to spy on Hamlet because they are worried for him and want to help him.

ReplyDeleteI think parents should let their kids be, but if the kid starts acting strange or acting as if something is bothering them and wont tell you, then the parent has the right to spy on their kid to make sure that everything is okay.
I think that Claudius and Gertude have the right to spy on Hamlet because he changes dramatically and their parents have to know what is bothering him so they can make sure that he is fine, safe, and out os trouble.
I think that the spying that Claudius and Gertrude were having on Hamlet is a really reasonable one because they only wanted to know what was wrong with him. I think that parents haver the right of spying on their children only if they want to know whats wrong or how can they help him.If the spying is really exessive then I dont think it is acceptable for parents to do it.
