Before the 20th Century, mental illness was not seen as a treatable medical condition, as it is today, but as a permanent problem (or worse, possession by the devil). What do you think of Ophelia's "treatment"?

I think during that time the people are treating her good, because usually many would stay far away and send them to their doom to die in a harsh way. In the kingdom they are at least willing to help her even though in our view it is a little harsh.

I think that they have done a good job in some ways and terrible job in others ways of Ophelia's treatment. They lucked her up in a room were she wont harm herself so thats a good thing, but no one talks to her that is terrible no one wants to actually help her, and in my opinion that is the worst thing you can do to some one who is not mental stable

Ophelias treatment is just as barbaric and stupid as it was on those times. What is wrong with those people, they are not helping her in any way by bathing her with pressurised water from a big hose, a force jacket and a mini room with padded walls. She need to be around people that care for her and be shown that she is not alone and that not everything is over for her in life.

  4. The way they all treated Ophelia I think is really mean and they are being really dramatic because they act as if she had some kind of disease and they dont even want to get close to her. i think this kind of treatment doesnt even help it actually make thinks worts because Ophephelia is always alone and it is treated as an animal which makes thinks worst and can take things to the worst part like suicide.

I think that they are treating her horribly even though she has gone mad its as if they are forgetting how important she was to everyone, and instead of being treated like the beloved family friend that she was to them, now she is being looked down on as an animal.

The treatment was not good and that is why Ophelia's madness did not get better and remained same. If in that time they thought that mental problems were not treatable I guess there was no more way for them to treat her better.

I think they were really harsh. As if she was infected or something. Gertrude didnt even want to talk to her, she felt sacred or disgusted. They left her far away from everybody else, in a liitle room with cushioned walls so she coldnt hurt herself, and she was also dressed with a long robe with her hands tied. Nobody really cared, once they knew that she was mad, they thought there was no cure, they didnt even try to talk to her.

I think that Ophelia's treatment was horrible. They acted as if she was not once a "normal" human being. She was isolated and ignored. They didnt even want to talk to her, I think that when she came out with her hands tied behind her back was way to far. They should treat her as a normal person and talk to her about everything that had happened to her, like her fathers death.

  9. I think that "Ophilias treatment" is the worst treatment ever. They are treating her like an animal insted of givng her what she really needs: Love. She should be taking care of insted of leaving her in a closed room and just acting like she dosent even exist.

Well the treatmen that is given to ophelia is dfenetly not very professional and least of all fair. Being put away and alienated form everyone is going to propbably affect her mental state even further. I guess things that we do right now will seem outrageous to people in the future too but at least we try to our best to help people. At the same time you cant relaly balme them becauser they do not know what is really happening to her and are scared.

I think they treated Ophelia nicely compared to the other crazy people in thouse days. They treated her nicely because of her fathers death. Her father was a very important person and had a very high and respected status. So that is why i think they treated her nicely.
